International meteorological agencies and humanitarian organizations have issued urgent warnings about severe weather conditions expected to hit Yemen in the coming days, including heavy rainfall and widespread flooding that could exacerbate the country’s already dire humanitarian crisis.
The warning, issued jointly by the World Meteorological Organization (WMO) and the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA), highlights the risk of flash floods, landslides, and infrastructure damage across multiple governorates, particularly in low-lying and mountainous regions.
“Forecast models indicate that Yemen will experience unusually intense rainfall over the next 72 hours,” said a WMO spokesperson. “This poses a serious threat to displaced communities, informal settlements, and flood-prone urban areas.”
Local authorities have been urged to prepare emergency response plans and alert residents in vulnerable zones. Aid organizations are also mobilizing resources to provide shelter, food, and medical assistance in anticipation of potential evacuations.
The warning comes amid Yemen’s ongoing conflict and economic collapse, which have left millions without access to adequate housing, sanitation, or healthcare. Flooding in previous years has led to outbreaks of waterborne diseases, destruction of homes, and disruption of humanitarian aid routes.
